J.L. Hudson, founder of the Hudson's department store, lived here from 1894 to 1904. Held by the same owner for about 20 years, the Hudson-Evans House is an 1872 French Second Empire landmark in Brush Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with red brick on rough-cut stone, two-story bays, and a mansard roof of patterned slate. Nearly 9,000 square feet across the main house and a separate carriage house, with 11 bedrooms, seven fireplaces, a sunroom, and a full Irish pub. The carriage house also holds a two-bedroom, one-bath apartment, currently occupied and not pictured. Built for Detroit shipowner Philo Wright and given in 1882 as a wedding gift to Grace Whitney Evans of the David Whitney Jr. lumber family. Most recently used as law offices, and zoned Planned Development for residential or commercial use, subject to city approval. On a 0.38 acre lot, blocks from Little Caesars Arena, Comerica Park, and the new Hudson's Detroit on Woodward.
